How will yoga make me feel?
Here’s how most people feel when they start practicing yoga. Read our Yoga for Beginners FAQ below, and we’d love to have a chat if you’re thinking about joining our next Beginners’ Course.
Comfortable
Yoga has been scientifically proven to ease common musculoskeletal conditions such as low back pain. As the Beginners’ Course and your yoga practice evolves, you’ll soon start to feel more comfortable and may even find that physical niggles you’ve had for years, simply evaporate.
Calm
Science proves that a regular yoga practice with an aspect of meditation, such as the types of session we offer, can improve your mental health and bring a sense of calm. You may find that you start to sleep better and enjoy improved mood and happier relationships after making yoga part of your life.
Connected
In these secular times, many people feel disconnected from spiritual experience. Yoga can help you realise your true nature as a divine being having a human experience. It can also enhance your connection to the infinite, whatever your cultural background.
Beginners’ Yoga FAQ
Do I need to buy a mat?
Not necessarily, we can lend you some things for the first few weeks, but please do get your own mat if you decide to make your practice your own
This gear is excellent…
Sustainable, higher quality mats and blocks that will accompany your yoga journey for years.
What happens when I arrive?
When you get to your first yoga class, please turn off your phone, take off your shoes and make yourself comfortable on your mat. Sit cross legged if that works for you, using the blocks and blankets available to support you. Some people kneel, or chairs are available.
Should I eat before a class?
Please come to your yoga class with an empty stomach as we will be compressing the abdomen and engaging in some energising twists. Try to have a light meal no more than two to four hours before the session, or arrange to eat afterwards.
What should I wear?
Wear yoga pants, shorts or leggings with a T-shirt or vest top. It helps if your clothes don’t ride up. Clothes that stretch with you so you can move freely are ideal. Tie your hair back so it doesn’t distract you. We will be barefoot throughout the practice so no special footwear is needed.
Should I bring a drink?
By all means bring a drink into your session, but if possible drink some water and go to the loo beforehand, to minimise any distractions during your class. Another reason to be early! If you are drinking water during the session it can break the spell a bit..
What if I have a health issue?
Let your teacher know if you have any injuries or ongoing health issues so that the practice can be tailored to help you participate.
Is other equipment used?
We provide blocks, blankets, bolsters and straps as appropriate, to help you participate more fully. We’ll fully explain what each element is and how to use it.
What happens in a class?
Classes last around an hour. We start by sitting quietly and finding our centre. The session will open with some energising sun salutations. As the class progresses we’ll move into a variety of standing and seated postures, before a slow cool down. We’ll lie down to gradually move into a place of deep relaxation. Sessions usually conclude with an opportunity for meditation.
Is meditation involved?
Classes often finish with a chance to meditate. This is an opportunity to explore different ways to still your mind, with techniques drawn from many different cultures. Hopefully you'll find a technique that resonates for you and that you can carry into your daily life.
What if I just can’t do it?
Advanced yoga might seem intimidating, but this is a yoga course for total beginners! Everyone has to start somewhere, and everybody moves at their own pace. There are no expectations (especially not a head stand on day one). Your yoga practice will develop gradually, as your body gets stronger and more flexible. Ella is an incredibly kind and thoughtful yoga instructor. She’ll suggest adaptations you can try to help you get the most out of each session. You’re welcome to rest on your mat at any time. It really isn’t a competition, don’t judge yourself. Quiet perseverance is the key.
What’s the Do Yoga ethos?
Do yoga every week and it will change your body. Do yoga twice a week and it will change your mind. Do yoga every day and it will change your life. As a beginner practicing yoga once a week, you should start to feel the benefits after around four weeks. Don’t give up, it really is worth the wait on so many levels.
